HOBY in Virginia
As an affiliate of HOBY International, the Virginia HOBY Leadership Seminar, Inc. provides the following programs:
- Annual Virginia Leadership Seminar
- Community Leadership Workshops
- The HOBY Alumni Chapter
Participant Selection
Each September, the National Association of Secondary School Principals sends nomination materials to all public and private high schools in the United States. Each school in Virginia is given the opportunity to nominate an outstanding sophomore based on his or her leadership potential. That sophomore represents his or her high school at the Virginia HOBY Leadership Seminar held in Richmond, VA.
Leading and Learning
All discussions and presentations center around the theme “Leadership Through
Service.” Activities, created to stimulate inherent potential, are centered around three perspectives of leadership: individual, group, and community and society. In addition, HOBY students, to whom we refer as “Ambassadors,” participate in interactive activities that enhance their HOBY experience. The seminar’s emphasis on service motivates the Ambassadors to make positive contributions to their schools and communities, thus making them more active, aware, and responsible citizens.
The Ripple Effect: HOBY VA Seminar Results
- One young man and one young woman from the seminar are selected to represent Virginia at the HOBY World Leadership Congress, currently held annually in Los Angeles, California.
- HOBY Alumni influence future leaders by assisting with subsequent HOBY seminars.
- The HOBY Alumni Association allows alumni to continue their learning through travel programs, alumni reunions, and hands-on leadership experience, so that learning and leading never end.
- Every HOBY alumnus(a) commits to 100 hours of community service in the year following their HOBY experience.
